MASTHEAD

These are my original designs for my music magazine masthead. Because my music magazine if of a mixed genre, I wanted to chose something they would be to imposing of a certain genre and I wanted it to be gender neutral. All 3 of my masthead ideas have a similar look; all of them are upper case to look bold, but each has a different effect. My first design is 'Revolution' is block capitols, but is in boxes to make it stand out more. At first, I thought the block design would be eye-catching and draw attention to the front cover but in the end decided it had to much of a masculine look and detracted to much from the main image (making the front cover look busy). My second design is in block capitols but this time without a border. Although it isn't as eye-catching, I think it gives a better look and is very gender neutral, but because the letters 'R' and 'O' are filled in it gives a unique look that makes the design look less simple. My third design gives off a hand drawn 'graffiti' style which although gives a different look, doesn't make as good of an impact as the first two designs because they are more ordered. Overall, I chose the second design for the reason that it looks more gender neutral and I think it would look better on the front of the magazine.

Magazine Mind Map

This is my mind map for 'Revolution' magazine. Looking at my mood board, I decided I liked the looks and layout of both 'Q' and 'NME' magazine. Overall, I wanted the front cover to be more focused on the main image and have little writing the front of the magazine; other than the masthead, some cover stories, the double page spread and the story from the main image. I think that this would give the front cover a sophisticated look, and would be gender neutral, unlike magazine such as 'Kerrang!, which has a lot of effects and writing covering the front of the magazine giving is a rock/grunge effect. The contents page for 'Revolution magazine' I also wanted to keep simple and sophisticated; a lot of white space with the contents information linking with pictures on the page, which is similar to the DPS. I also wanted the colour scheme to link throughout the magazine like 'Q' and 'NME'.

'Revolution" magazine front cover

This is the design for the front cover of 'Revolution' magazine. I wanted the front cover to look simple, and not as busy as magazine such as 'Kerrang!'. By having little cover stories on the front cover, it also means the person buying the magazine is more focused on the main image, and with the right colour scheme to draw in people attention I think it will look very effective and sophisticated. The shaded boxes on the front cover represent sections, so in the overall design will just be writing floating over the main background image. Underneath the masthead, in a small line will explain what the magazine is about. I wanted the masthead to be big and bold at the top of the page to draw peoples attention and make it more obvious. Because the magazine is of a mixed genre I needed to pick a colour that draws attention to the front cover but is gender neutral. Other magazine like 'NME' and 'Q' usually have a colour scheme of White, Red, and Black, but some special copies of 'NME' have bright neon looking colour (such as the cover with Jimmy Hendrix on the front), which is more of a unique look I want to go for.

'Revolution' magazine contents page

This is the design for the contents page of 'Revolution' magazine. Like 'NME' magazine, I wanted my contents page to not look to busy, and be clear to read. I decided to have either a title or the magazine masthead clear at the top of the page, and then pictures dotted about the page with writing directly underneath each picture clearly stating what each article is about. There would also be a lot of white space on the page to make it look simple and easy to read. There would also be a section at the top left hand of the page for information about the magazine/ editorial letter or even a quote from one of the main features for the magazine. I like this idea, although it means I can't fit many stories onto the page and most likely, in most magazine the pictures would be for the features, and I haven't drawn in a dedicated section for the regulars, so It might be something I have to re design. I want the contents page overall to look similar to NME but I think I need to think of something to make it original to my magazine and perhaps something more quirky (like a background) to show of design features and make it look more interesting.

'Revolution' magazine DPS

This is my design for 'Revolution' magazines DPS. I wanted to have images mainly on the left hand page and text on the right with a big title and drop cap at the begging of the article.

Mood Board

My mood board consists of images from NME and Q magazine. I chose these two magazine because I think they both use colour and layout very effectively, which is something I want to enturpret into the style of my magazine. The colour schemes of both magazines usually consist of red, white and black, which is eyecatching and links well with the bold writing placed on the front cover. This technique is used on the top left hand NME over, to draw attention to the picture of Amy Winehouse on the front cover, and makes the front cover more interesting to look at (unlike magazine such as Kerrang!, that subsitute a good clear layout and colour scheme for there magazine with good background and masthead effects).
The way that the contents page for NME is layed out is simple but effective. It contains a lot of white space, but it is clear to read about the articles and contains pictures directly above to give the reader a better idea what the article is about. Both magazines DPS are also pretty simple, and contain clear images of the artists giving an idea about the article.
